Issues for women in mid-life.

No matter how often we have heard that mid-life has some issues that we will all face, nothing really prepares us for how to handle those things when they come. During mid-life we begin experiencing significant changes in our relationships while also trying to manage careers, empty nest issues, physical changes, and new emotional weight that comes along as part of the baggage. We can suddenly find ourselves in the midst of trying to manage new kinds of stress, anxiety, potential depression, and new personal growth. We sometimes discover that the traumas we have faced earlier in our lives still rear their heads when we least expect them. We also discover new traumas that affect us, even as we dismissed them as just part of the difficulty of life that everyone goes through. But here's a news flash--just because others have gone through these things does not mean it is easier for YOU to experience them.

The significant change and uncertainty that we discover as we approach mid-life can lead to stress and anxiety. Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause have a significant impact on our moods and our sense of emotional well-being. While these things are occurring, many women are also reconsidering their career trajectories, dealing with issues related to marriage and divorce as well as relationship changes brought on by an empty nest. This can be overwhelming!

At HopeWell Counseling, I specialize in working with women as they navigate this season of their lives. I work with my clients to provide tools for managing these feelings. We work to process what is happening and develop healthy coping mechanisms even as we explore new opportunities and consider how to make meaningful changes. Therapy can provide a safe and supportive place to navigate these transitions.

If you find yourself approaching this time of life, or if you are in the midst of it somewhere, I would love to talk with you.
